Frequently Asked Questions

How much compensation for an Amsterdam Schiphol delay?

Compensation under EU261 depends on flight distance: €250 for flights up to 1,500 km (e.g. AMS–London, AMS–Brussels), €400 for 1,500–3,500 km (e.g. AMS–Istanbul, AMS–Tunis, AMS–Cairo), and €600 for flights over 3,500 km (e.g. AMS–Dubai, AMS–New York, AMS–Bangkok). A 3+ hour arrival delay or cancellation with less than 14 days' notice triggers the right to claim.

What is the Netherlands 2-year deadline — why is it urgent?

The Netherlands applies a 2-year limitation period for aviation passenger rights claims — shorter than most EU countries. If your Schiphol disruption occurred more than 22 months ago, you must file immediately. The Dutch enforcement body is ILT (Inspectie Leefomgeving en Transport) and the ADR scheme is Geschillencommissie Luchtvaart. Claims submitted after the 2-year period will be refused. Do not wait.

Does EU261 apply to Emirates flights departing Schiphol?

Yes. EU261 applies to all airlines departing from EU airports, including Emirates. An Emirates flight from Amsterdam AMS delayed 3+ hours at Dubai entitles each passenger to €600 (AMS–Dubai is ~5,100 km, long-haul tier). The return Dubai → Amsterdam on Emirates is not covered (UAE carrier, UAE departure). KLM — a Dutch EU carrier — covers both directions.

KLM rejected my claim — how do I escalate in the Netherlands?

Escalate to Geschillencommissie Luchtvaart (the Dutch aviation ADR body) or file a complaint with ILT (the Dutch aviation enforcement authority). KLM participates in the Geschillencommissie scheme. Decisions are binding on participating airlines. The service is free for passengers. Important: file within the 2-year limitation period. If Geschillencommissie is unavailable, file directly with ILT.

Schiphol is a major KLM hub — does KLM cover EU261 on return flights from outside the EU?

Yes. KLM is a Dutch EU-registered carrier (Air France–KLM group, Dutch operating certificate). EU261 applies to KLM flights in both directions: departing from EU airports and arriving at EU airports from non-EU destinations. If your New York–Amsterdam KLM flight arrived 3+ hours late at Schiphol, you are entitled to €600. This applies because KLM is an EU carrier — the rule for non-EU carriers (like Emirates) operating return flights does not apply to KLM.
