Frequently Asked Questions

When does EU261 apply on Europe–Turkey flights?

EU261 applies in two scenarios: (1) Any airline departing from an EU airport to Turkey — this covers Turkish Airlines, Pegasus, Air France, KLM, Lufthansa and all carriers on EU departures to Istanbul, Antalya, Bodrum, Dalaman, etc. (2) EU-registered carriers departing from Turkey back to Europe — Air France, KLM, Lufthansa, TUI fly Netherlands, Transavia, Corendon etc. are covered on return flights. Turkish Airlines and Pegasus are NOT covered on return flights from Turkey.

How much compensation for European–Turkey flight delays?

Compensation depends on route distance. Most European capitals to Istanbul and Turkish resorts fall in the medium-haul tier (1,500–3,500 km): Paris–Istanbul ~2,250 km (€400), London–Istanbul ~2,500 km (£350 UK261), Frankfurt–Istanbul ~1,850 km (€400), Amsterdam–Istanbul ~2,250 km (€400), London–Antalya ~2,850 km (£350 UK261). Exception: Rome–Istanbul ~1,370 km is short-haul (€250). All require a 3+ hour arrival delay or cancellation within 14 days.

Turkish Airlines rejected my EU261 claim — how do I challenge it?

Turkish Airlines frequently rejects valid EU261 claims, citing non-applicability to Turkish carriers. This is legally wrong. EU261 Article 3(1)(a) covers all airlines on EU departures. Challenge the rejection in writing, citing Article 3(1)(a). Then escalate to the national enforcement body in your departure country: DGAC (France), LBA/SÖP (Germany), ILT/Geschillencommissie (Netherlands), CEDR (UK — UK261 applies). ADR decisions are binding on participating airlines.

What are the time limits for Turkey flight EU261 claims?

Belgium: 1 year (most urgent — act immediately). Netherlands: 2 years. Italy: 2 years. Germany: 3 years (from end of year of disruption). France: 5 years. UK: 6 years. If you flew from Belgium, you must act now. Even from Germany with a 3-year window, delay costs you evidence and momentum.

My Istanbul connection caused me to miss Antalya — is that covered?

Yes, if your entire itinerary was on a single booking. If you booked Frankfurt → Istanbul → Antalya as a single ticket (one PNR) and missed the Antalya connection because of a Frankfurt delay, EU261 covers the full journey. Compensation is based on the full Frankfurt → Antalya distance (~2,200 km → €400), even if the disrupting segment was Frankfurt → Istanbul. This is the single-booking rule under EU261.
